Community Run Gaming Club
New Mexico Gamers Society was established in order to facilitate discussions within the New Mexico gaming community, assist with scheduling online games, and bring attention to local gaming stores in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since grown to include members from all over the world.
Social Distancing Like Heroes Do!
Due to family health issues Christof & Linda Deimer founded NMGS near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as a means for our gaming community to continue playing online and to support our local game stores. This was largely intended to facilitate the Stay at Home Play at Home initiative to advocate for social distancing & flatten the curve. Since then it has grown and even when restrictions are lifted we expect to see this online community continue to thrive.
Initially our first members were from the D&D Adventurers League community at Ettin Games & Hobbies in Albuquerque. Since then we have been growing our online community to include game stores throughout New Mexico from Taos down to Las Cruces and have gamers that are interested in a variety of games and play styles. While our community members are largely made up of New Mexico residents, this is not a requirement as we have members from throughout the country and even abroad. We do encourage tips for game runners to be sent as store credit to local New Mexico game stores and when in person gaming becomes viable once more we will likely only be organizing in person events in New Mexico but will continue organizing online events for everyone from anywhere.
The majority of our conversations with the gaming community are done in our discord server where each event host has their own text and voice channels and we have several channels for assorted topics, such as announcements of upcoming events, Virtual Table Tops (help & how to), miniature painting, game creation & development, memes, Looking for Group, and so forth. Beyond the Organized play 5th edition D&D we also have event hosts that are running homebrew D&D games, X-wing on table top simulator, Vampire the Masquerade, 2nd edition D&D and we are hoping to diversify the availability of gaming styles and systems even further.
All members must agree to our Code of Conduct prior to being allowed to join the discord or register to Host or Play in any of our events. The Player registration gets vital details to the host for the event being signed up for while the Event Host registration gets the administrators the initial details needed to setup a new game runner with their events on our scheduling service. Whether game runners want to run open seat game sessions or have dedicated closed groups that might occasionally be looking for additional players, we are happy to set them up as event hosts and have their games on our schedule. When a new Event Host is first established we also set them up in the discord to post in the announcements channel, as well as their own text and voice channels if desired, access to our paid Zoom service & so on. New Mexico Gamers Society utilizes a number of premium services that are paid for with donations or by the administrators. These services include Scheduling from Acuity, hosting and domain services through Dreamhost, a Zoom subscription that allows for unlimited group meetings, & so forth.
The website for NMGS is the home to the ongoing gaming schedule and features links for registering to play in a game or host one, a list of New Mexico game stores that were willing to give us their details, a permanent invite link to our discord, links to our various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, & Twitch), as well as a detailed FAQ that covers some specific questions that new comers often have. The website is designed and maintained by Christof Deimer while he and Linda Deimer both serve as Admins for the group as well as hosting regular events themselves. There are a number of moderators that help with the discord channels and well over a dozen different event hosts.
The current pandemic will end & when it does we want to ensure
that we have not lost our community or our Local Game Stores.
